Tofu recipes
Tofu is an important ingredient in oriental recipes and vegetarian dishes. In China, where tofu originated, it is extremely popular and used daily. It is eaten under different forms: just raw, stir fried in oil or boiled in soup. When people go vegetarian, tofu is the preferred substitute for meat: it has a meat like structure and by using the spices it can obtain a savory taste. Tofu is a very versatile food that you can use in about any recipes: from stir fried dishes to delicious sweet desserts. The fact that tofu has very little flavor or smell on its own can be used as an advantage: it can be used as a canvas for presenting the flavors of the other ingredients. Firm tofu is the preferred type of tofu in main mails, whereas silken tofu, due to its soft structure, can be used as ingredient in desserts. The recipe will probably state which type of tofu is required.
Tips for using tofu in recipes
On the menu on the right you will find many recipes using tofu as main ingredient but you can also follow the tips to incorporate more tofu in your recipes:
- Add small cubes of firm tofu to your favorite soup or silken tofu to creamy soups.
- Non-vegetarians can partly substitute mince with crumbled tofu to make it lighter and healthier. When you thaw frozen firm tofu its structure will change. You can then squeeze it dry and chop it to obtain a more mince-like texture.
- Add small cubes of fried tofu cubes to salads.
- Mash tofu with garlic powder, salt and seasoning to make a sandwich spread.
- Replace part of the mayonnaise, sour cream or ricotta cheese in your recipe with silken tofu.
- Add some salt of soy sauce to silken tofu and drink it as such.
- Freezing of firm tofu gives it a more meaty texture. Drain tofu before freezing to obtain extra firmness.
